Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk star David Jonsson is to play the son of T’Challa in Black Panther 3, due out in 2028.

Director Ryan Coogler announced last year that, right after his acclaimed period horror Sinners, he was returning to the Marvel stable with Black Panther 3. Months later, we now have a new star in the title role: David Jonsson, the actor who’s previously lit up the screen in the likes of Rye Lane, Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk.

The British star will play the son of T’Challa, the incarnation of Black Panther played by Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer in 2020.

Marvel made the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, where Jonsson appeared in person. “Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and privilege and the blessing to join,” he said, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Ryan Coogler has directed the two previous Black Panther movies released to date, with the 2018 original making over $1bn and receiving Oscar nods to boot. The 2022 sequel was overshadowed by Boseman’s tragic passing at the age of 43; T’Challa died off-screen, with his younger sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright) replacing him as the new Black Panther.

As well as introducing Jonsson as Prince T’Challa II, Black Panther 3 will bring some of the same traditional filmmaking epic-ness that Coogler brought to Sinners. The filmmaker announced that he’s shooting the sequel on 70mm film – making it the first Marvel movie shot on the format. Coogler’s Black Panther films have always looked impressive; maybe this second sequel will see him push further beyond the Marvel house style.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned over the weekend: whether or not there’s still a role for Denzel Washington. The actor previously said that Coogler had written a part for him into the upcoming sequel; we’ll have to wait and see whether that’s still the case.

Black Panther 3 has a release date set for the 15th December 2028.
