“I have absolutely no idea where it came from,” Christopher Nolan has said of the online rumour that he planned to remake 1983’s Blue Thunder.
If an online rumour sounds too incredible to be true, then it usually is. In 2024, following the $1bn box office barnstormer that was Christopher Nolan’s sad scientist drama, Oppenheimer, that word got around that the director was secretly planning to make a helicopter thriller.
Not just any helicopter thriller, either: this was going to be either a remake of or homage to 1983’s Blue Thunder, in which Roy Scheider piloted an experimental police helicopter capable of surveillance and, with its massive cannon strapped to the front, potentially good at breaking up a protest in seconds.
Given that law enforcers in some US states are now mulling the possibility of arming drones, Blue Thunder’s concerns about the militarisation of the police feels rather prescient. (Though the film is mostly just a rip-roaring action thriller, with director John Badham staging some truly impressive aerial sequences you’d never get away with today.)
Anyway, back to the rumour. It soon emerged that Nolan’s Oppenheimer follow-up was, in fact, The Odyssey – a mythological epic that contains precisely no helicopters, unless you count the ones used to hoist cranes and crew around remote Mediterranean locations.
It was during the publicity trail for his latest film that The Telegraph girded its loins and asked Nolan what on earth all those Blue Thunder rumours were about.
“I have absolutely no idea where it came from,” Nolan told journalist and critic Robbie Collin, adding that he was “bewildered” by the story’s spread.
Then came Nolan’s last, drily amusing word on the matter: “And besides, I was always more of an Airwolf fan.”
