British love story Layla has wrapped production for Film4 and the BFI, and some details of it have come to light.

Layla, which is described as “an unapologetically joyous queer fairy tale, a contemporary Romeo and Juliet about two lovers caught between separate groups within the LGBTQ+ community in London.”, has wrapped production. It’s a new British romance that’s set to head our way next year.

The plot follows the romance between a struggling British-Palestinian drag performer and a successful white gay man, based on the real life experience of filmmaker Amrou Al-Kadhi, who writes and directs. Al-Kadhi drew on their lived experiences as a British-Iraqi drag performer in London when writing the script.

The cast includes rising stars Bilal Hasna and Louis Greatorex, as well as Safiyya Ingar, Terique Jarrett, Darkwah and Sarah Agha. RuPaul’s Drag Race star Baby and pop star Self Esteem also feature.

Layla is currently in post-production. Film4 will released the film in the UK next year, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
