Not today’s most shocking revelation, this, but still. An interesting Reddit AMA popped up over the last day or two with actor Alden Ehrenreich. He’s been promoting his latest film, A Talent For Murder, and answering an assortment of questions.
This one caught my eye.
Ehrenreich was one of the ensemble cast of Christopher Nolan’s multi-Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, and was asked whether on set, Nolan was as ‘anti-tech’ as he seems to come across in interviews. He reportedly doesn’t do mobile phones (Nolan, not Ehrenreich), and – as we witnessed in The Odyssey more recently – the kind of director who would far rather do things in camera than a computer.
“Yes, he’s definitely as anti-tech as all that implies”, wrote Ehrenreich in response to the question. He then went into the specifics a little bit more, and how his approach is the opposite of the traditional ‘video village’ that’s resident on most sets.
“He walks around with a very small, very low tech monitor that he watches everything on. He’s an incredibly powerful presence. The set is full of artists at the very top of their field, working as hard as they can because they know what they’re working on in special and meaningful, and that they’re working for a master filmmaker. Very few opportunities come along like this over the course of a career. Being in that rarefied air was very special.”
It’s pretty much as expected, but still: very much against the Hollywood grain.
Ehrenreich clearly enjoyed his stint on the film, in particular the time he got to spend with Robert Downey Jr on it (Downey Jr would take home an Oscar for Oppenheimer too.) And you can read his full Reddit AMA session right here.
