Alicia Silverstone was due to reprise her iconic role in a Clueless sequel TV series, but that has now been abandoned.
Clueless fans were (possibly?) excited to learn in 2025 that Peacock was planning to do a whole new sequel series to the 90s teen movie classic. Alicia Silverstone was due to return to her role as Cher Horowitz.
Unfortunately, Variety reports that the series is no longer in development. CBS Studios and Paramount are still keen on the IP and Variety expects there to be a lot of interest in reviving it, particularly given just how popular the 1995 film has remained.
The director of Clueless, Amy Heckerling, was attached as an executive producer as was original producer Robert Lawrence. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, of Gossip Girl fame, were writing and executive producing alongside Jordan Weiss.
There was no info on what the series would be about, other than that it would pick up with Cher years after the events of Clueless.
The original film debuted in Summer 1995 and immediately gained positive reviews and a large fanbase. Loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, it quickly established itself as one of the defining movies of its generation. It’s held up remarkably well, too!
The Peacock project wasn’t the first Clueless TV show. A spin-off series aired on NBC in 1996 and followed the friends from the movie. Silverstone wasn’t able to return, so Cher was played by Rachel Blanchard. The series ran for three seasons.
If or when we might return to Bronson Alcott High is now uncertain, but I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ve heard of Cher Horowitz.
