CD Projekt Red’s hit videogame Cyberpunk 2077 is set to become a movie at Paramount Pictures, courtesy of producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Beneath its banner company Skydance, Paramount Pictures is currently busy reviving a string of familiar names for the remake or reboot treatment. There’s Days Of Thunder 2 and Top Gun 3 on the way, while Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay are said to be re-teaming to make a new Transformers.
Meanwhile, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura – who’s also overseeing the new Transformers – has another project on the go: an adaptation of the hit videogame Cyberpunk 2077.
Released in 2020, the dystopian open-world action RPG was years in development, and hugely ambitious – offering nothing less than an entire William Gibson-inspired future city to roam about in. A buggy initial release knocked it back a little, but the game was still a massive hit, selling some 40 million copies and garnering increasingly positive reviews as its developers ironed out the glitches.
Keanu Reeves, the king of big-screen cyberpunk, also starred as the former rock star turned revolutionary Johnny Silverhand; we’d be slightly surprised that, with its deep pockets, Paramount didn’t give Reeves a massive bag of cash to appear in the upcoming feature adaptation.
There was first talk of making a Cyberpunk 2077 movie in 2023, though it seems that those earlier fans fell apart – it was in development at Anonymous Content, the firm that gave us True Detective and Mr Robot. There was also an animated show, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which emerged on Netflix in 2022.
The Cyberpunk 2077 news comes as Hollywood sees gold in the videogame hills; the Mario and Sonic film adaptations have made lots of money (billions, in fact); A Minecraft Movie became a weird cultural phenomenon that caused havoc in cinemas; and Zach Cregger made an absorbing horror romp out of Resident Evil this year.
We’ll bring you more on Cyberpunk 2077's progress as we get it.
