The planned feature-length Dynamic Duo will unite two Robins in 2028 – and feature a cutting-edge animation style.

Earlier this month, we covered the report which announced that a new animated feature film starring a pair of Boy Wonders was being planned for a wide theatrical release. That film is Dynamic Duo, an animated film that will focus on the early days of future Batman sidekicks Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, before they each became known to the wider world as Robin.

Discussing Film have claimed that the film is set for wide theatrical release in the spring of 2028. Dynamic Duo is said to feature ‘massive action set pieces similar to The Bourne Ultimatum.’ As well as finally getting some serious Robin action, we’re particularly excited for the film’s brand-new animation style, described as ‘a blend of CGI animation, practical elements of stop-motion, and live-action real-time performance.’

It hails from Swaybox Studios, an animation house based in New Orleans. You can see a test reel which provides an insight into the studio’s hybrid animation style below.

For fans of the Caped Crusader (and especially those who feel that the Batman’s series of teeage sidekicks have been cinematically underserved over the past few decades), this is undoubtedly good news. Should this upcoming film be set inside of James Gunn’s new DC Universe, we’re going to get a film in cinemas not only featuring two future Robins, but focusing on them exclusively. How this works with Warner Bros boss David Zaslav’s reported desire to make Robert Pattinson’s Batman the Dark Knight of the DCU, we don’t know… but honestly, James Gunn probably doesn’t either and we’re steadfastly hoping that Zaslav either forgets that idea or gets distracted by something newer and shinier.

The film will follow the two characters’ exploits as young thieves, who choose Dynamic Duo as their team name. A double dose of Robin origin stories sounds great to us, not least because the planned live action DCU Batman debut is said to be Batman: The Brave And The Bold, a film which will introduce Damian Wayne as the current Robin of the DC Universe. We’re not quite sure what the status of that project is since rumours spread that director, Andy Muschietti had left the project in the wake of The Flash's poor reviews.

Hopefully though, it’s still in the works as it will bring us a lighter Batman than we’ve seen in the last couple of decades. If all of this does prove to be true, then maybe Tim Drake’s Robin will get some love too at some point, given that Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Damian Wayne’s iterations of the character all seem to be heading to the big screen.

We’ll bring you more on this story as we hear it.
