Directed by Deep Blue Sea and Cliffhanger’s Renny Harlin, Deep Water will see Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley fend off killer sharks.

Exactly a quarter of a century on from his last toothsome opus, Deep Blue Sea, director Renny Harlin is returning to shark-infested waters with the upcoming Deep Water.

Filming has already wrapped on the survival thriller, with shooting having taken place on locations in New Zealand and Spain, but it’s only now that Screen Daily reports that the movie stars Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley.

The stars are among the luckless passengers whose flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai crashes into the ocean, where they’re forced to survive as hungry sharks begin to circle.

Quoted in Screen Daily’s report, Harlin – also famous for the likes of Die Hard 2: Die Harder and Cliffhanger – doesn’t mention his earlier shark film. Instead, he draws parallels between Deep Water and 1970s disaster flick, The Poseidon Adventure.

Deep Water offered me an epic canvas to work on, which I’ve dreamed of since seeing the original The Poseidon Adventure in a movie theatre as a kid in Finland,” said Harlin. “My superb cast stood by my side valiantly through a rigorous shoot of barrel rolling planes, tidal waves of water and ferocious sharks. This film is my tribute to all the action, imagination, emotion and beauty that made movie making the first love of my life. I can’t wait to show the audiences around the world what an emotional rollercoaster we have created.”

This is the second film Eckhart has made with Harlin in recent months; the pair recently collaborated on The Bricklayer, the latest in a growing sub-genre of occupation-based action flicks we’ve seen of late. (see also: The Beekeeper. No, really – go and see it.)

Deep Water is now in post-production, and its production company Arclight Films is currently seeking distributors at this week’s European Film Market.
