Destin Daniel Cretton has been fired to bring the famous 60s TV series to the big screen. More on the Hawaii Five-O movie below.
Destin Daniel Cretton has had a very successful summer. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is 2026’s highest grossing film, with over $2.4bn under its belt and it could still break Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ record of the highest domestic gross of all time.
But Cretton is already looking ahead.
Deadline reports that Cretton is moving onto directing a movie adaptation of TV’s Hawaii Five-O series. Paramount Pictures is behind the project but they are still working on the fine print behind the scenes and Deadline points out the studio still “has to close the deal.” Chris Bremner and Noah Oppenheim will be writing the script once the deal is sealed.
The original series, created by Leonard Freeman, premiered on CBS in 1968 and ran until 1980. It starred Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett, who headlined a police task force that investigated organized crime in Hawaii. Most episodes ended on the iconic line “Book ‘em, Danno”, as McGarrett ordered his partner Danny Williams to take the criminal into custody. It was very cool.
The series was previously remade for TV in 2010 with Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park leading the cast. The series had a very successful run and ended in 2020 after 240 episodes.
The series has had several attempts to be made into a movie but none have succeeded. The first attempt came in 1996 when George Litto tried to get the movie on the go, but a lawsuit from CBS, despite being settled in Litto’s favour, ruined that attempt. DreamWorks also tried to make Hawaii Five-O into a movie, but nothing came of that either.
Cretton is still set to direct the Naruto movie adaptation and Charles Melton is attached to star in it. The last we heard, that film was going into production in February 2027, so we can only assume Hawaii Five-O has to wait until that film is close to the finishing line. But once again, the deal over the Hawaii Five-O movie hasn’t been finalised yet, so there’s still plenty of room for this to go sideways.
Hopefully, the fans of the Hawaii Five-O series will be finally able to see their favourite characters on the big screen. There’s no info on any cast or when this might be going into production if the deal goes through, but we’ll make sure to keep you updated on all things Hawaii Five-O.
