The joy of a copyright-free legend, eh? This year, we’ve had Paul Greengrass’ The Uprising, which for a day or two was billed as a Robin Hood-linked tale. Then, Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer were on cinema screens in The Death Of Robin Hood too.

Now, here come another take on Robin Hood, with The Lie Of Sherwood Forest getting underway over the coming days.

This time, Thomasin McKenzie, Finn Cole and Antony Starr are leading the ensemble, and they’re working from a script by Harris Kauffman. The story came from Patrick Vollrath and Joachim Heden.

Directing duties are being handled by Vollrath as well, who previously helmed the taut thriller 7500, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Well worth seeking out, that.

Described as a “radical new take on one of the world’s most enduring legends”, the angle here see Robin and his companions deceived into taking on a rescue mission, that turns into a heist.

Starr is playing Robin Hood here with McKenzie the woman who lures him into danger. As per the synopsis that’s been issued, “As loyalties fracture and hidden motives emerge, the outlaws must confront the true cost of their choices – and the price of challenging those in power. But what begins as one desperate lie will inadvertently change the course of the legend forever.”

It’s also “a visceral, high-octane retelling of the Robin Hood tale.”

It’s going to take some time to get to the screen of course. The movie is seeking distributors at the American Film Market this week, and it’s going to be shooting through to the end of the year. That points towards some kind of release at the back end of 2027 at the earliest, presumably at a point where we’ve forgotten about this year’s Robin Hood films.

More as we hear it. Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner and their accents will be watching on…
