Jessica Rothe reveals that work has been done on Happy Death Day 3, although Blumhouse and Universal still have a decision to make.
2017’s Happy Death Day and its sequel, 2019’s Happy Death Day 2U may not have done gigantic box office numbers, but they did perfectly well on their initial release, and have continued to grow an audience since.
Written and directed by Christopher Landon, who more recently did the Hitchcock-inspired Drop, it’s always been clear that there were plans for a third film. Happy Death Day 2U’s modest $64m global box office led to Blumhouse and Universal Pictures not jumping at the possibility of a third film.
However, Christopher Landon had come up with Happy Death Day To Us, with star Jessica Rothe keen to return. By 2025, this was then looking like it was going to be a TV series, but it sounded like they hadn’t give up hope of a film.
Well, they still haven’t. Jessica Rothe has been chatting about a third film again, and confirmed that she and Christopher Landon are both keen for it to happen, and have done a fair amount of work on the story.
While promoting her new movie, River, Rothe revealed that the pair had popped off to a local-ish café and “sat there for hours and broke the third movie.” They know what’s going to happen, and they’re ready to go with it. The problem? “We’re just waiting for Universal and Blumhouse” to give them “just a little money.”
Landon’s slate is currently being filled by The Final Girl Support Group, that he was announced as adapting and directing over the summer. He’s also been linked with a supernatural horror called Final Boarding. It sounds like he’s not lacking projects to do, but also, even when we spoke to him, he was keen to return to the world of Happy Death Day as well.
Still some way to go. But the films to date have been modestly budgeting, and the intent is clearly there. We wait and see.
