A ‘loosely-connected’ short film starring Jackie Earle Haley and Sylvia Hoeks will be packaged with The Green Knight's upcoming home formats release.
David Lowery has announced that a surprise short film, The Oak Thorn & The Old Rose Of Love will be packaged as an exclusive extra on the upcoming disc release for his 2021 Arthurian epic, The Green Knight. The film promises to tie in loosely to the events of The Green Knight and features the talents of Watchmen's Jackie Earle Haley and Blade Runner 2049's Sylvia Hoeks.
Speaking about the release, Lowery explained that “it’s not directly related, but it is based on another piece of Arthurian lore, so there’s definitely a connection”.
He added that “I’d already been thinking about adapting this particular story, and as we were coming up with ways to make the Blu-ray extra special, I thought it would be nice to have an adjunct movie on the disc. I love physical media, and loved the idea of having this short film that would never be released online, that would only ever be available on the big screen or on this disc. I’m sure someone will rip it right away, but in theory this short film is an exclusively physical object”.
Hopefully, the UK will get a version of the disc too, although we’ve already had The Green Knight release onBlu-ray over here.
Upon its release in 2021, The Green Knight was hailed for being steeped in atmosphere and undoubtedly created the most compelling Arthurian world that we’ve seen in a good many attempts, perhaps since John Boorman’s Excalibur all the way back in 1981. To see that world expanded somewhat will certainly be a treat and the fact that this is a physical release only is a nice touch too.
