Another return to Westeros is being planned, but this time Warner Bros wants a Game Of Thrones movie. More here.
HBO’s Game Of Thrones came so very close to being the peak show of the peak TV era. Boasting more must-see moments than any of its rivals, for years the fantasy saga was an unrelenting tractor beam, constantly drawing in new audiences as the buzziest show on television.
While the signs were there beforehand, it was of course that final season that was the undoing of Game Of Thrones however, with a series of baffling story decisions and lack of narrative logic seriously denting the show’s reputation. HBO’s prequel spin-off House Of The Dragon has its admirers but hasn’t really been able to rebuild the fervour around the Seven Kingdoms that once existed when Game Of Thrones was at its all-conquering peak.
Perhaps that’s why Warner Bros appears to have reversed its original decision to keep Game Of Thrones as a prestige TV show and according to The Hollywood Reporter, has a film project in early development.
Per the report, no director or even writer is yet in place, so it’s very early days but it’s interesting that the studio is even considering this approach given that it has previously rebuffed any attempts to transplant the show into a feature film project.
Both Warner Bros and HBO seem to have altered their stance towards this kind of cross-pollination approach in the last few years. While HBO’s reputation as the home of ultra-prestige TV meant that it was siloed off from meddling hands, changes in leadership at both HBO and Warner Bros, not to mention shifting fortunes for both companies means that times have changed,
We’re seeing plenty of action on this front already, what with Matt Reeves’ The Batman get a spin-off show, The Penguin whilst Dune: Prophecy is about to launch too. Now it looks like Game Of Thrones could be making the same leap, only in the reverse direction.
While the huge scope of George RR Martin’s fantasy world means that there are plenty of eras, tales and locations to explore, perhaps the most tantalising is a film project following up on the events of Game Of Thrones. One of the series’ problems was just how truncuated that last season felt. Could a sort of extended epilogue give some of those cherished characters a more fitting send-off and perhaps even buff out some of the dints to the show’s legacy as well?
We do have another Game Of Thrones TV show on the way next year: A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms is coming and we’re very much looking forward to it, not least because its the book it is based on is far more ripe for adaptation than House Of The Dragon’s source material. When we do hear more about future Game Of Thrones projects, we’ll let you know right here.
