Edward Berger describes reports that he’s on the James Bond director shortlist as “absolute rumour”. More here.
You’re set to see a fair few interviews with director Edward Berger over the coming months, as his new film Conclave seems certain to be a leading contender in the upcoming movie awards season. His last film – All Quiet On The Western Front – was something of a gong attractor too, so he very much knows the drill.
What’s changed since he was last in the awards spotlight though is that Berger has been heavily linked with directing the next James Bond film. This isn’t something that he’s brought up himself, rather that the rumour mill has him on a list of directors for the next 007 adventure.
With Conclave popping up at a festival over the weekend, so Edward Berger gave a long interview to Deadline about the movie, and it goes heavily into his filmmaking story. It’s only at the end that the James Bond question gets asked, and Berger couldn’t shoot it down fast enough, it appears.
“That’s an absolute rumor. There’s no truth to it whatsoever. I would be very grateful if you put out that fire”, he said to the interviewer, which leaves little wiggle room for doubt. There’s a follow-on question and answer too where Berger offers praise to Barbara Broccoli, the 007 producer. But it’s only in the context of having been adamant about the rumour beforehand.
There’s actually another rumour surrounding Edward Berger at the moment, and that’s linked him with directing Ocean’s 14, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. No word on that at the moment, and it didn’t crop up in the interview.
Conclave arrives in cinemas in the UK this coming November, although it’s going to be popping up at London Film Festival first. And, as we discussed in the following video, there’s no word yet on the future of James Bond. We’ll keep you posted on all fronts…
