Julie Andrews has cast doubt on her return to the world of The Princess Diaries, in spite of Disney’s plans for a further sequel.

The announcement of The Princess Diaries 3 last month came as something of a surprise, though perhaps it was inevitable given Disney’s penchant for both legacy sequels and the need for fresh content on Disney+.

So far, we know that Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji has penned the screenplay, with a director still yet to be attached (original director Garry Marshall is sadly no longer with us). Original producer Debra Martin Chase will return to produce alongside The Other Woman screenwriter Melissa Stack.

The fabric of the films comes from Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, with their mentor/student relationship being at the heart of the franchise. However, Andrews has now cast doubt on her return for the sequel, telling Access Hollywood that “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible. It was talked about very shortly after [the second sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run”.

There is still no word yet on Anne Hathaway’s involvement, the only nugget being that she has expressed a desire to return in various interviews over the years.

We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
