Name a bigger hit than KPop Demon Hunters this year. Sony and Netflix’s animated movie about a demon slashing Kpop girl group has become the streamer’s biggest movie to date and Netflix even brought a sing-a-long version to cinemas earlier this year.
Naturally, we were all asking whether a sequel was coming and there’s finally some news on that front. As reported by Bloomberg (here via Variety), Netflix and Sony have closed a deal to make Kpop Demon Hunters 2 and plans to get it on the streamer – and hopefully cinemas – in 2029.
Yes, that’s a bit of a gap between the two films, but it does take a little longer to make animated films, so it is to be expected.
No official director has been announced and there’s no word on whether co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return. Kang especially has been very keen on making a sequel, emphasising how much the first film set up.
“Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes,” she told Variety.
Kpop Demon Hunters, which hit Netflix in June, was largely praised for its animation style, writing and pretty much every other element. It’s really rather good. Even now, over four months since the film’s release, several of its songs are still on the Billboard Hot 100 list and pretty high up it too.
Hopefully, the film’s success will convince Netflix to give more of its films theatrical releases, especially since Kpop Demon Hunters’ short cinema run proved to be very popular, despite the fact that the film had already been available on the streaming service for months.
