KPop Demon Hunters is arguably one of Netflix’s biggest recent success stories. The straight-to-streaming animated film about four demon hunters/pop stars spent 63 weeks in the Netflix Top 10 and garnered over 352m views in the first 90 days. Now it’s also getting its own Criterion release!

As we learned in 2025, a sequel is on the way and will be released in 2029, but it looks like it won’t be going straight to the streaming service this time around.

Deadline reports that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos promised at Bloomberg’s Screentime event on Wednesday that KPop Demon Hunters 2 would be heading to cinemas. And it won’t just be everyone’s favourite band that’ll be taking over cinema screens.

“On one end of the spectrum is La Bola Negra, Train Dreams last year that could have played in the theaters for six months and it wouldn’t have impacted, it would have done net positive on Netflix,” Sarandos explained at the event.

“Those kind of art house films play like that. And then the other end is the kind of four-quad family rewatch movie, so we said let’s take those two and treat them different. We’re going to do a big wide release for Narnia next year, and then we’ll do a big wide release for Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory at the end of the year. We think they’ll do great, and when the KPop Demon Hunters sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.”

Sarandos promised that Narnia would spend 50 days in cinemas while Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and La Bola Negra would have a 46 and 47 day run in cinemas. Meanwhile, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will spend 27 days in cinemas and Peter Berg’s Mosquito Bowl will have a 26-day run.

2025’s KPop Demon Hunters, which went on to win the Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, had a limited theatrical release, but clearly Netflix has learned their lesson. There’s still no specific release date or any plot details available, but we’ll keep you updated on those.

Meanwhile, La Bola Negra has been amassing very positive reviews at film festivals since its premiere at Cannes in May. The Spanish-language drama looks to be Netflix’s strongest Best Picture bet since Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma in 2018. Netflix will also be putting a lot of faith on Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which will hit cinemas in February 2027 and Netflix in April.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but we’ll keep you updated on it.
