A blaster once belonging to Star Wars supporting character Boba Fett is going up for auction – and there’s quite a bounty on its head. The price, not the chocolate bar.
If you’d like to own a blaster that once belonged to the Star Wars universe’s most famous bounty hunter, then you’ll probably have to track down a few wanted criminals to pay for it.
An EE-3 carbine blaster, as used during the production of 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, is going up for auction in early December – and in a sign of how sought-after Star Wars memorabilia and props still are, it has an estimated sale price of £350,000 to £700,000 – just shy of a million dollars.
The mystique of the weapon’s owner also explains the price. Despite only having a minor role in the film itself, Boba Fett quickly became one of the most beloved characters in the franchise – something creator George Lucas appeared to miss, given how the bounty hunter was treated in Return Of The Jedi.
Although later derivatives and replicas exist, the listing states that this has carbine has been authenticated as the original prop used in the second Star Wars movie, as handled by actor Jeremy Bulloch. Like so many background details in the franchise, it’s essentially a kit-bashed piece of real-world weaponry: a Webley & Scott flare gun from the First World War. This was then dressed up with additional details to give it a retro-futuristic look.
As is reliably the case with these Propstore auctions, the December sale is positively stuffed with other pieces of film history. Will Ferrell’s green get-up from Elf; a Pulse Rifle from Aliens (there must have been quite a number of these produced as we’ve seen them for sale before); a Grays Sports Almanac from Back To The Future II; and, if you want something truly nightmarish to decorate your home, a pair of Wednesday and Pugsley stop-motion puppets from Addams Family Values.
These and other items will go under the hammer in the three-day sale beginning at 3pm on the 5th December. If you’re feeling flush, you could get yourself quite a fancy early Christmas present.
One final bit of Boba Fett-related trivia before we go. The actor beneath the helmet, Jeremy Bulloch, was born in Market Harborough, Leicestershire. One of the town’s most famous sons, Bulloch is memorialised with photos and placards with information about him in the local JD Wetherspoon pub. This means you could sit and enjoy a Thursday Curry Club korma beneath a massive image of Boba Fett.
