Amazon is making a TV show of Tomb Raider, with casting for the lead role of Lara Croft now in its final stages.

According to a new report, Amazon’s Tomb Raider series could be about to make its boldest step forwards yet with the appointment of its lead character, the ice-cool and intrepid explorer, Lara Croft.

The character has been the main draw in the games since the series’ beginnings in 1996 when she became something of a cultural icon, amassing a legion of fans in the decades that followed.

Given that previous live action takes on the character have come from no less than Angelina Jolie (pictured) and Alicia Vikander, the bar for a new actor to elegantly vault over has been set pretty high. According to Deadline, four names are in the frame to take the role in the planned TV series which is gearing up for a shoot early next year.

As it stands, Game Of Thrones’ Sophie Turner is on the shortlist, alongside Bohemian Rhapsody's Lucy Boynton. Both actors are said to be testing for the role. Mackenzie Davis who most recently starred in Speak No Evil and Emma Corrin who featured in this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine are also said to be in the frame, although the outlet states that they could be in the mix but are reportedly refusing to test for the part.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge has written the series and may well direct part of it too.

At the moment, any estimate of what kind of Lara will lead the series will be pure conjecture and therefore fans will just have to speculate as to which might be best suited for the role. Angelina Jolie’s take on the character was a cooler, more experienced take on Lara, echoing the original series of games, while Alicia Vikander’s version was less experienced, telling something of an origin tale as the later series of rebooted games did.

Netflix’s recent anime, Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft, continued the latter story, but there are plenty of fans out there that would rather see Amazon’s series pick up the adventures of the original Lara. We’ll wait and see who gets the casting nod.
