Marvel is shaking things up, having just hired directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead to helm its new Daredevil series.
Marvel’s new Daredevil series, titled Daredevil: Born Again, has been in trouble for some time now. Recently, we reported that Marvel is going back to the drawing board for the series after not being too happy with the material already shot.
Well, we’ve got some rather exciting – or potentially really depressing – news about that drawing board.
Marvel has tapped Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as series directors for Daredevil: Born Again, while Dario Scardapane will act as the new showrunner. Additionally, Chris Ord and Matt Corman have departed the project as writers, but will remain as executive producers.
It’s a real show of confidence in Benson and Moorhead’s work from Marvel. The pair have previously worked on Moon Knight and directed several episodes of the on-going second season of Loki, which is one of the best things Marvel has released in the last two years.
On one hand, fans of Benson and Moorhead’s delightfully weird, low-budget sci-fi films such as Spring and The Endless, have been asking for years for the pair to do a superhero film, and clearly, the pair have impressed the people at Marvel.
On the other hand, it’s difficult not to be discouraged by the news, as it might mean the pair can’t go off and make another weird little sci-fi on their own. That being said, we wouldn’t worry too much. The pair told our sister site whynow in 2022 that they’ll always make time for those smaller films they get to do on their own terms.
The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news about Scardapane, Benson and Moorhead’s hiring, also reported that Marvel is looking to emulate the darker tone of Netflix’s Daredevil series, which remains one of the better Marvel TV offerings. Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil. He has played the role in the Netflix series as well as appearing briefly in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the TV show She-Hulk.
The series was originally dated for early 2024, but that plan has seemingly gone out the window with the actors’ strike still going on. There’s no new release date, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
