We’ve known for a few years now that a remake of Andrzej Żuławski’s seminal 1981 psychological horror was in the works. Possession followed an international spy and his wife whose marriage starts falling apart and then supernatural things start happening too.

The original starred Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani as Mark and Anna, so we’ve been waiting for news on what pairing might take over these iconic roles. Robert Pattinson was rumoured to star in the film, but that seems to have changed.

Vanity Fair (via Bloody Disgusting here) reports that the roles have gone to Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner. There’s even a very nice photo of the two receiving the scripts from writer-director-producer Parker Finn of the Smile films fame.

Pattinson is still attached to the project as a producer. The project also started a massive bidding war among big Hollywood studios, including Paramount, Netflix, A24, Sony, and Warner Bros. but it was Paramount who emerged as the winner.

Qualley was last seen in Edgar Wright’s How To Make A Killing and will also star in Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars this August. Adjani’s performance in Possession, particularly that emotionally scarring miscarriage scene, has gone down as one of the most iconic performances in horror cinema and it won the actress the Best Actress award in Cannes, so Qualley has the challenge of not just matching it in intensity but creating her own version of the character. Not that she’s unfamiliar with unhinged horror films; she was magnetic in The Substance in 2024.

Turner, meanwhile, is set to star in Karim Aïnouz’s Rosebush Pruning this June and also features in Will Gluck’s One Night Only later this year.

Possession was initially banned in the UK as a video nasty shortly after its release and in America, a heavily edited version, running just 81 minutes, was screened, but the film was eventually rediscovered and appreciated years later.
There’s no release window for Possession remake yet, but Finn did promise “a viciously sharp, crazy, insane film” back in 2024.
