One side of the Film Stories project that I donโ€™t talk about too much on this site, but perhaps should, is the drive to do movie events in the UK that arenโ€™t in London. There is a Film Stories event heading to London at the end of November, but also, Iโ€™m a Midlander, and there are three (at least) things Iโ€™m doing around here in September.

And hereโ€™s the first. Jenny Nelson and Mark Kermode have written a brand new book entitled Mark Kermodeโ€™s Surround Sound, which is an exploration of the world of film music. Itโ€™s been in the works for some time, and the pair are coming to the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham to talk about it.

The event – Film Stories presents An Evening With Mark Kermode & Jenny Nelson โ€“ is taking place on Friday 12th September 2025 at 7.30pm. The pair will be nattering on stage with me, and theyโ€™ll be taking questions from the audience. Plus, you can buy Jenny and Markโ€™s book afterwards and theyโ€™ll sign it too.

Then, on Wednesday 17th September, my own show โ€“ Film Stories Live โ€“ is back. This is 90 minutes, where you get me nerding on about films for a good while, and a local filmmaking guest will join me on stage. To give you an idea of whatโ€™s in store, last time the show featured: weird old film magazines (with the oddest front cover of all time), a celebration of movie stunts, an action film made in Birmingham, a stunt performer who worked on Gladiator II, a game at the end with money can buy prizes, and the audience going through a phase where they started applauding every slide that went on the screen.

Next time? Who knows whatโ€™ll happen. Tickets have just gone on sale, and are here. Plus! In the hour before, thereโ€™s an informal saying hello in the bar area too. If it goes anything like last time, you can watch me smash my lip open as I try to erect the Film Stories pop-up stand.

Tickets for both events, and more details, can be found by clicking on this magical link here: THIS LINK.

The third event will be announced shortly. Please help spread the word!
