Filming for Mike Flanagan’s take on The Exorcist has wrapped filming ahead of the film’s 2027 release. More on the project below.
Mike Flanagan is a busy man. Not only is DC’s Clayface, which he wrote, out later this year as is his Carrie TV series, but the director has also just announced that filming has wrapped on his upcoming The Exorcist movie.
Flanagan announced the happy news on Instagram, captioning an image of an upside down purple cross with “That’s a wrap. What an incredible experience. Forever grateful to this extraordinary cast and crew!”
The film will star Scarlett Johansson, Hamish Linklater, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Carla Cugino, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan and many more. Not much is known about the film’s plot yet, but Flanagan has always preferred to keep things close to the chest.
Flanagan’s film follows David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer which was due to reboot the franchise for modern audiences and had a sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, planned but due to Believer’s financial and critical failure, that plan was abandoned.
Flanagan, who is perhaps best known for his run of excellent horror TV shows for Netflix, chased the opportunity to direct an Exorcist film “aggressively”, seeing an opportunity to do something unexpected.
“This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise — something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia. I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made,” the director told The Hollywood Reporter in 2024.
There’s certainly a lot of pressure with this one, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Flanagan if you ask me. Flanagan has proved time and time again that he’s able to bring something new to familiar stories – Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting Of Hill House in the Netflix show of the same name, the works of Henry James in The Haunting Of Bly Manor, vampires in Midnight Mass, his various Stephen King adaptations – so The Exorcist franchise should be in good hands here.
Before we get too excited about this still-untitled The Exorcist film, which is out 12th March 2027, we do still have the Carrie TV show to look forward to. It still doesn’t have a firm release date, but the Prime Video series is expected this October.
