Everyone’s favourite killer doll will return to cinemas, with creator Don Mancini writing a new theatrical Chucky movie.
It’s now been almost two years since Chucky, the TV show about the titular murderous doll, came to an end, but things are looking up for fans of the franchise. The doll will once again be on the hunt for more victims and this time, it’ll be on the big screen.
That’s right: Chucky is making a return to cinemas, and it’s Don Mancini – who’s been involved with the franchise since the original 1988 film, Child’s Play – is writing the script.
Mancini appeared at the Steel City Con in Pennsylvania and shared the news, giving away a few details that Bloody Disgusting has since reported on.
Mancini promised that the film will go back to the franchise’s origins and attempt to make Chucky scary again. In its later years, the killer doll has become vastly comedic and campy, but the next film looks to go back to its roots. The new film will particularly lean on the approach of 2013’s Curse Of Chucky, which was meant as a reboot of sorts. That film was released mostly direct-to-video (some countries also got to enjoy it on the big screen), but it failed to make a big splash.
And just like Curse Of Chucky, this will likely be a bit of a reboot. Yes, the franchise already tried to reboot itself with 2019’s Child’s Play, directed by Lars Klevberg, but not much came of it, so another reboot is required to resurrect the franchise.
Mancini also said that the new film will connect itself to the previous movies and the TV show that ran for a respectable three seasons, so don’t expect another 2019 Child’s Play.
Mancini didn’t share when we might see this new movie, and it seems like it’s still early days for it. Mancini also didn’t reveal whether he might take on directing duties himself – he has directed several films in the franchise – or if someone else might be calling “Action!” on set. For now, we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed Chucky goes back to his former glory. Dolls just haven’t been scary enough recently, if you ask this writer.
