The legendary Japanese studio that birthed the King of Monsters has announced that a new Godzilla movie is in the works.

Just in case it didn’t pop up on your calendar, yesterday just happened to be Godzilla Day, with the iconic kaiju turning 68.

Toho, the Japanese studio who created Godzilla, marked the celebrations by announcing that it is working on a new Godzilla feature. Even better, the film is set to release in exactly a year.

The film will be Toho’s first domestic Godzilla film since 2016’s Shin Godzilla and will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki.

Of course, the studio’s international collaboration with Legendary Pictures has spawned a series of blockbuster Godzilla titles including 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong, a film which earned an incredible post-pandemic sum  of $470 million at the global box office, kickstarting a theatrical resurgence following flatlining ticket sales due to Covid-19.

Legendary’s television arm is currently developing a Godzilla series, again with producers from Toho. That will be coming to Apple TV+ whilst an untitled Godzilla Vs. Kong sequel is also in the works, to be directed by Adam Wingard who helmed the first film.

The news is also a salve for fans of the Japanese films, since plans for a sequel to Shin Godzilla were shelved back in 2018 in favour of building a more expansive universe. The new untitled Godzilla film represents the first step in that direction.  Fans of the mighty kaiju can relax then, knowing there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a wide assortment of Godzilla stories in the years to come.
