Curry Barker, director of Obsession and Milk & Serial, is said to be directing a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie.
Last month, it was announced that JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee were developing a new take on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the late Tobe Hooper’s legendary 1974 horror film. Our initial assumption was that Mollner might direct himself, given his superb work on Strange Darling, a 2024 horror thriller starring Kyle Gallner and Willa Fitzgerald.
Instead, Variety reports that Curry Barker will direct the new Texas Chainsaw, having recently made the acclaimed relationship horror, Obsession. His feature debut, it appeared at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and was immediately singled out for its combination of horror and comedy.
Assuming it happens, Barker landing the Texas gig will be quite a coup for the young filmmaker. Just a couple of years ago, he was making short films on YouTube, with his 2024 horror comedy piece, Milk & Serial, having garnered over 2m views at the time of writing. Lasting about an hour, the found footage shocker was made for just $800.
Barker immediately began work on Obsession, about a young record shop clerk whose use of magic to win his childhood crush’s heart goes violently awry.
His next film will be Anything But Ghosts, in which he’ll also star as a bogus paranormal investigator who encounters a genuine case of the supernatural. It’s being produced by low-budget horror maestro Jason Blum and, like Obsession, will be distributed by Focus.
Barker could be moving over to A24 for Texas Chainsaw after that; at present, little is known about the project other than it being a ‘reimagining’ of Hooper’s 70s classic.
The original was filmed as the US was in the grip of an unjust war, a crippling fuel crisis and political chaos under a dodgy President. We just thought we’d mention it.
We’ll bring you more on the new Massacre as we get it.
