Having broken out with Obsession, Inde Navarrette has a role in the next X-Men – and now the quirky sci-fi thriller, The Waffle House Index.

The Heat 2 rumours may have been a bit wide of the mark, but Inde Navarrette remains a highly in-demand actor following her terrific performance in the 2026 horror hit, Obsession.

Navarrette is set to play Rogue in Marvel’s rebooted X-Men franchise, and now has what we’re guessing is the lead role in a curious-sounding sci-fi thriller.

The Waffle House Index began life as a 2025 Blacklist script by Andrew Nunnelly. The positive vibes surrounding it were such that it recently got picked up by production company Plan B Entertainment.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Navarrette is set to star in the movie and will also be credited as an executive producer; that package of hot script and rising celebrity has since been acquired by Apple, whose previous original films range from awards-worthy fare like CODA and The Tragedy Of Macbeth and Killers Of The Flower Moon to whatever the hell Argylle was.

There’s something to note about The Waffle House Index, though: by all accounts, it’s really, really weird.

The title refers to an informal means of gauging the severity of a hurricane; the worse the storm is, the fewer branches of Waffle House will be open in a given area.

The Waffle House Index introduces Jane, a waitress at one of those diners who experiences the worst night of her life. First, she’s grieving the loss of a loved one; then a guy comes charging into the joint, screaming about the end of the world. Then a nuclear bomb goes off in the distance, crocodiles attack, and more strangeness occurs that we won’t mention here.

Seriously, the stuff mentioned above is just a hint of what happens relatively early in the script – it only goes more off-piste from there. The website Script Shadow has a more detailed exploration of what happens if you’re really interested, though you might want to leave yourself un-spoiled and watch the finished movie.

The Waffle House Index will be directed by Louis Paxton, a Scottish filmmaker whose latest film, The Incomer – a fantasy drama starring Domhnall Gleeson – is getting a quiet release in UK cinemas today. Its tone has been compared to The Ballad Of Wallis Island and The Wicker Man, which sounds good to us.
