Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are set for the next Ocean’s film, and a couple more details have come to light.
Following the box office success of Ocean’s 8 in 2018, Warner Bros was soon mulling over what it could do next with the franchise. Since Steven Soderbergh remade the Rat Pack-headlined original Ocean’s 11 in 2001 (pictured), the films have been of mixed quality, but the box office returns reliable. A further chapter is thus not a surprise, although the decision not to retain the Ocean’s 8 cast is more of an eyebrow-raiser.
Instead, the next Ocean’s film is going back in time.
Our old friend Brendon Connelly has been in touch, with a bunch of new details about the film. Jay Roach, we knew, is set to direct, but we now learn that the current working title for it is simply Oceans, with no number in there at all (or, seemingly an apostrophe).
The plan has been – and we wait and see if this makes it to the absolute final version – for the story to be set in 1961 (we previously knew it was loosely in the 1960s). There are elements in there involved a Grand Prix track, and expect to see the characters pop up in France during the story. “Expect to see some very lavish yachts”, Brendon also tells us.
It’s also said to be a prequel to 2001’s Ocean’s 11, this time with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling said to be leading the cast. It’s also absolutely not a remake of that film. Linked to it, yes, but still a separate chapter in its own right.
The bigger question is whether the ultimate greenlight for Oceans will be given (assuming that does indeed stick as its new name). News of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s involvement broke with substance last month (although they’d been linked for some time beforehand), and Carrie Solomon has written the screenplay for the movie.
Should Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling sign on the dotted line then it’s pretty much a done deal that the film’s going ahead. We’ll keep you posted as to any progress there.
