Odeon is trying to stop people sharing their MyLIMITLESS membership details, and is bringing in a few new restrictions as a result.

Customers of Odeon cinemas, and in particular those who are subscribed to its MyLIMITLESS card, have received an update over the last few days, as the company makes changes to the scheme.

Billed as ‘your ticket to infinite cinema’, the idea with MyLIMITLESS is you pay a monthly fee, and ‘you can now see all our films, as often as you like.’

Yet change is coming.

As per the update Odeon has sent out to its clientele, a few restrictions are now being imposed.

“Bookings should be made in line with how the membership is intended to be used”, writes Odeon, “meaning fairly and for your own personal use.”

As such, Odeon is now watching for:

Booking across cinemas that are too far apart on the same day
Booking across a high number of cinemas within a short period
Repeated bookings (5+ times) for the same film.

This feels akin to streaming services clamping down on password sharing, and presumably the intent is to stop people sharing details of their membership for others to get the benefit of it.

Odeon warns that when it detects booking activity that counters those guidelines, remedial action will be taken. A warning email will be sent at first, with stage two then being a 14-day restriction on advance and online bookings. The affected subscriber will only then be able to book tickets in person, on the same day.

There’s nothing there that’s going to affect the vast majority of patrons, in fairness. Inevitably though, there are concerns over how well it’ll be implemented, particularly for those who travel around a lot.

This has not gone down too well in some quarters though, particularly with those who travel around a lot. Also, as better people than me have pointed out, it puts a slightly different spin on the word ‘limitless’. But still, we’ll see how things pan out.
