Michael Biehn is the latest star to join Onslaught, a ‘gonzo action thriller’ from You’re Next and Godzilla X Kong director Adam Wingard.
UPDATE NO. 2: Michael Biehn is the latest star to join Onslaught, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter again. Reginald VelJohnson and comedian Eric Wareheim have also joined Adam Wingard’s action thriller and shooting is scheduled to begin later this month.
Biehn is said to play the leader of an elite group of mercenaries, who are trying to control whatever threatens the world. Wareheim and VelJohnson will play members of the trailer park community that is home to Adria Arjona’s mother with a special set of skill that will come in handy when things get messy.
UPDATE, 1st November: Dan Stevens has also joined Adam Wingard’s Onslaught, as per The Hollywood Reporter. The film marks a reunion between the two as Stevens appeared in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Wingard’s excellent 2014 thriller The Guest.
The outlet writes that Stevens is due to play a German scientist working on the threat that gets loose in the film, prompting Adria Arjona to use her “particular set of skills”. Mixed Martial Artist Alex Pereira is also set to star in the film as The Butcher. We’re sure he’s a very mellow chap.
Filming on Onslaught is due to begin in November in New Mexico and A24 is backing it. There’s no news on a release date, but hopefully we’ll have an update on that soon.
Our original story follows…
17th September, 2024: Having starred in two well-received thrillers over the past year – that’d be Blink Twice and Hit Man – Adria Arjona’s reportedly set to appear in another one, this time from director Adam Wingard.
Most recently, Wingard’s been best known in multiplexes for his expensive monster flicks – 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong and 2024’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. For his next film, it’s said that the filmmaker’s returning to the smaller-scale thrillers of his earlier career, most notably 2011’s You’re Next and 2014’s The Guest. As reported in May, it’s called Onslaught, and its script, co-written by Wingard and Simon Barrett, is described as a ‘gonzo action thriller’ by The Hollywood Reporter.
From what’s known about that script so far, it sounds as though Onslaught will feature some sort of monster, albeit not necessarily as big and city-wrecking as Godzilla or Kong. According to THR’s undercover agents (okay – studio sources), “Arjona will play a mother who falls back on a particular set of skills in order to protect her loved ones after she runs afoul of a threat that has escaped from a military base.”
Could Onslaught be a more action-oriented take on something like JJ Abrams’ Super 8, with Ajia Arjona fighting an alien that’s broken out of an Area 51-like installation? If so, we’d pay to watch that.
Arjona will reportedly executive-produce the movie as well as star in it, while boutique studio A24 (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Civil War) will co-finance alongside Lyrical Media.
Having remained consistently busy over the past decade, Arjona’s career has really taken off of late, not least thanks to her terrific performance in the aforementioned Hit Man, directed by Richard Linklater, in which she starred as a mysterious woman who hires Glen Powell’s hitman to off her husband. Arjona’s similarly shiny in Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut, the enigmatic island thriller Blink Twice, amid a cast which also includes Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum.
More on Onslaught as we get it.
