If you’re keeping count, there are currently seven films in the Paranormal Activity movie franchise, the most recent of which – 2021’s Paranormal Activity: Next Of Kin – resurrected the series after a six year break. Now, the newly-minted Paramount Pictures is getting its motion cameras out again for a fresh instalment.
This time, a personnel change. Jason Blum is involved through his Blumhouse outfit (as he has been since the start), and he’s brought in James Wan as a fellow producer on the new film. Oren Peli, who wrote and directed the original is also on the team of producers, which reminds me of an interview I once did with him where he basically – not in a nasty way – didn’t want to talk about any of his upcoming films.
That notwithstanding, the new film is said to be a priority for Paramount, unsurprisingly given that the movies tend to be economic to make, and nicely profitable too. That said, the sponge of the original format has been squeezed so there’s barely a dribble of water left in it. I confess, I enjoyed the one where they were using an Xbox Kinect (remember them!?) to highlight supernatural entities, but there’s certainly an element of rinse and repeat about most of the sequels.
The new film doesn’t, to my knowledge, have a writer or director attached at the moment, nor has any casting been announced. There’s a sporting chance that they’ll just go back to square one here, bring in a new bunch of people, and try to scare the bejesus out of them.
The likelihood is that once the greenlight has been given, the turnaround on the movie will be relatively swift, and don’t be surprised if somehow it springs to life in time for next Halloween. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more on that, though…
