Long awaited sequel The Princess Diaries 3 is finally moving forward, with Adele Lim (Joy Ride, Crazy Rich Asians) to direct.
2001’s The Princess Diaries and it’s 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries: A Royal Engagement have become beloved family favourites over the years. Chronicling Anne Hathaway’s Mia as Julie Andrews’ Queen helps her transform from an ordinary teenager into Princess of Genovia, the characters from Meg Cabot’s long running book series were brilliantly brought to the screen by director Garry Marshall and screenwriters Gina Wendkos and Shonda Rhimes, respectively.
It was reported back in 2022 that a third film was in the works at Disney, with the screenplay penned by Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji. But it’s taken quite a while since then to actually get to fruition.
Still, according to Deadline, Crazy Rich Asians writer Adele Lim will direct the film. Original producer Debra Martin Chase is also onboard, with Lim’s producing partner Naia Cucukov and The Other Woman screenwriter Melissa Stack executive producing.
Lim said in a statement, “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants [we think she means ‘tenets’ – Ed] of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
While Anne Hathaway has often reiterated how eager she is to return to the franchise, Andrews has downplayed her own involvement, saying in an interview “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible. It was talked about very shortly after [the second sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run”.
No cast members have been confirmed thus far.
We’ll keep you updated as we hear more. In the meantime, you can watch both Princess Diaries films on Disney+.
