Last year saw the release of The Black Phone, a film made in the classic fashion weāve come to expect from the Blumhouse production company. It cost less than $20m to make and earned a very respectable $160m at the box office. Scott Derrickson directed the supernatural horror, working on the project after opting to walk away from directing Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness for Marvel Studios. The Black Phone (which is based on a horror story by author Joe Hill) was a win for everybody, then. Blumhouseās model worked once again, the film made money, Derrickson got a project to throw himself into following those ācreative differencesā with Marvel, and we got a solidly-enjoyable film (a nice role for Ethan Hawke in it, as well). You can catch Derrickson talking about the movie on a 2022 edition of the Film Stories podcast.

That formula seems to have convinced Blumhouse to go back to the well again then, as it has announced that The Black Phone 2 will be arriving on 27th June 2025. Given the blockbuster delays weāve seen throughout the strikes, that could be a pretty packed month for releases, but Blumhouse has always been pretty nifty when it comes to counter-programming and we imagine this occasion will be no different. One thing we donāt yet know is whoāll be helming the film. The piece in The Hollywood Reporter makes no mention of a director, while the filmās IMDb page ā appreciating thatās never the most reliable source in the first place ā also lacks that information. Derrickson is producing, but weāll have to wait and see who takes up the reins for the sequel, which we presume will continue the premise of a disconnected phone that can communicate with the voices of the dead. Weāll let you know more on this Black Phone sequel as we hear it. ā Thank you for visiting!
