Saw 11 seems to still be planned, and franchise creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell (not pictured) have given a small yet promising update.

We’ve been waiting for Saw 11 for a few good years now, or at the very least, some kind of update that another Saw movie is on the way. Last year, it looked as though the horror sequel might be dead, but Blumhouse got involved in June 2025, resurrecting the project and bringing back James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the director and writer – and star! – of the original film respectively.

Things are finally looking up, with Wan and Whannell heading to Sundance for a special screening of the first film. There have been a lot of rumours about the duo returning to the huge horror franchise they started to steer it back to its roots. Their appearance at Sundance certainly didn’t put those rumours to rest.

Jigsaw, Tobin Bell’s scheming killer, was killed off all the way back in Saw III in 2006, but the franchise showed no signs of slowing down in his absence. In 2021, we got Spiral: From The Book Of Saw which was the first Saw entry that didn’t involve Jigsaw, instead featuring a copycat killer.

Directed by franchise veteran Darren Lynn Bousman, it tried to go back to the origins of 2004’s Saw by making it more of a detective thriller – starring Chris Rock, of all people – than an ultra-violent horror movie.

That didn’t go well with fans or critics, which is why Wan is promising there isn’t another Spiral-like film planned.

“It’s definitely not Spiral, it’s not Spiral,” Wan told Bloody Disgusting. “And I still blame Leigh for killing off Jigsaw, because it’s fucking hard to try and make any future Saw movies without Jigsaw,” Wan said.

“Leigh and I, we’re not going to give too much away, but we don’t think you can make a Saw movie without Jigsaw,” Wan continued. “That’s the bottom line. And ultimately, we want to hark back to the spirit, what Leigh and I love about the original first movie. The original first movie, which is Jigsaw’s philosophy and what makes him tick.”

“Ultimately, he’s a scary guy in the first one, and we want to go back to making a scary Saw movie again, with this omnipresent thing that Jigsaw had in the first film,” the director added.

“But so it’s a really kind of like dig into that. And definitely we want to give the fans what they love about the whole franchise as well, whilst I think it’s very important we want to do something new and fresh that hasn’t been done before. That’s the sale. That’s my pitch.”

As a long-time fan of Saw, I do like the sound of that. Jigsaw is the heart of the franchise, but how the pair is looking to bring him back is still a mystery.

After the original Saw, the franchise got perhaps too preoccupied with creating more and more elaborate traps for Jigsaw’s victims. It came at the expense of the sheer terror of the first film, which was mostly divided between the detective work and the bathroom trap, where Whannell’s Adam was trapped with Cary Elwes’ Dr Gordon.

When might we finally see Saw 11? No idea, but hopefully there will be more updates in the near future. It seems that Wan and Whannell are closely involved, and this writer is keeping her fingers crossed that they’ll return to direct and write the new instalment.
