Blumhouse’s erotic M3GAN saucy robot spin-off Soulm8te is going straight to streaming in August after Universal pulled its cinema release. Trailer, anyone?
Update: What if M3GAN, but saucy? That appeared to be the thinking behind Soulm8te, an erotic sci-fi spin-off originally announced in June 2024.
Originally, the plan was to release the thriller, directed by Kate Dolan, into cinemas via Blumhouse’s regular distributor, Universal. The date was pegged as the 9th January 2026. But then, after the disappointing box office of robo-sequel M3GAN 2.0, the studio dropped it from its release calendar, and things went rather quiet.
After months of deafening silence, Soulm8te has popped up again: it’s now going straight to streaming from the 1st August.
The timing of its launch is unfortunate, given its parallels with this year’s viral hit, Obsession. A lonely chap (David Rysdahl) brings home a compliant female robot ‘companion’, but then gets more than he bargained for. We’ve seen a number of things along the same line in recent years; Subservience, with Megan Fox as the robot that goes on the rampage; 2022’s Wifelike; last year’s Companion.
In a quote shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Soulm8te’s director put a positive spin on the movie going to streaming.
“Soulm8te is a movie about that vicious cycle,” she said. “It is a satirical, unhinged movie that explores desire, obsession, autonomy and control. It’s a movie that knows how ridiculous it is, and I’d argue it’s best watched the way you’d watch Basic Instinct or Showgirls now, with friends, a drink in hand, and zero shame about shouting at the screen.”
There’s a trailer for the movie below.
Our original story follows…
17th December 2025: It sounds like bad news for Soulm8te, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s spin-off from the M3GAN franchise. Billed as an erotic sci-fi thriller, it was originally scheduled for release on the 9th January 2026 – but according to a Deadline report, Universal Pictures, its distributor, has dropped it from its release calendar.
An aura of vagueness has surrounded Soulm8te for a few months now. M3GAN 2.0 emerged earlier this year and failed to do the business its predecessor enjoyed. In the aftermath, there was an ominous silence in the place of trailers and posters for Soulm8te, originally announced in June 2024.
Universal is now said to be looking around for potential buyers, and at this stage, there’s no word on where it’ll end up.
Directed by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother), Soulm8te is the latest in a small yet growing subgenre of human-robot sexual relations movies. It’s said to be about a lonely widower who, still grieving the loss of his wife, decides to buy in a gynoid to keep him company – but then the robot starts going somewhat off the rails.
It sounds markedly similar to the 2024 thriller Subservience, in which Megan Fox played a robo-maid who goes all Hand That Rocks The Cradle on an ordinary American family.
Other examples include 2022’s Wifelike, in which robot replicas are made for grieving widowers, and to a lesser extent, perhaps, Humans – a 2015 sci-fi series which also explored how robots and sexuality might one day intersect.
According to World Of Reel, the early word is that Soulm8te is on the trashier end of the sci-fi seriousness spectrum, with a source saying it features a scene in which a delivery worker’s manhood is squished by the gynoid’s vice-like vagina. We can’t see why Universal would have a problem with such a film.
We’ll bring you more on Soulm8te’s trajectory as it comes in. Until then, why not check out our list of sci-fi films to look forward to in 2026?
