Josh O’Connor has been recruited for Steven Spielberg’s new film, The Dish, as the ensemble continues to grow.

The cast for Steven Spielberg’s next film continues to expand, with the ensemble sounding more impressive with each new name. Although his involvement was rumoured a while back, it has now been confirmed (via Deadline) that Josh O’Connor has joined the cast of the project, which is believed to be titled The Dish.

Ever since news of the project first broke back in April of this year, the buzz surrounding Spielberg’s next film has it pegged as a UFO movie, returning the filmmaker to the backdrop which he reshaped several times with films like E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and then years later, War of The Worlds.

O’Connor joins an impressive ensemble that already includes Colman Domingo, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson.

O’Connor has already made a huge splash this year with Challengers, one of 2024’s best films, and the momentum from that project has seen him land roles in Kelly Reichart’s next project, The Mastermind opposite Alana Haim. He features in another mighty ensemble cast in Rian Johnson’s new Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man for Netflix which will release in 2025.

The actor is also rumoured to be re-teaming with Challengers director Luca Guadagnino on Separate Rooms, a Paris-based romance picture that also stars Léa Seydoux. Given that Guagagnino’s slate keeps getting new projects added to it all of the time (not to mention projects simply getting dropped), there’s no guarantee when this will happen, or even if the project will ever go before cameras.

Because plot details on Spielberg’s film are being kept firmly under wraps, we don’t have any idea as to the type of character O’Connor will be playing in The Dish but we do know when we’ll find out: the film is set for release on 15th May 2026, a return to the tentpole summer release spot that Spielberg hasn’t occupied for many years now.

At some point, more detils are sure to emerge on the nature of this project and when they do, we’ll be sure to let you know.
