We’ve got a very merry Grinchmas to look forward to! The Hollywood Reporter’s got the scoop that a sequel to 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas is now in the works and both Jim Carrey and Ron Howard will return for the film.
Carrey famously portrayed the titular Mount Crumpit resident who hates Christmas and sets out to destroy the celebrations of the merry Whovians. Howard directed the film, which has become a Christmas classic in many households and, as THR notes, was only beaten by Home Alone as the top Christmas movie on streaming last Christmas.
Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandelith are in charge of the script with Carrey returning as the Grinch and Howard sitting in the director’s chair. The original film was a loose adaptation of Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss’ 1957 book of the same name.
Rumours, or perhaps wishful thinking, of a sequel to the film have been circulating for years now, so news that a sequel is finally moving ahead is a jolly one for many. A sequel to Dr. Seuss’ book was released in 2023, titled How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, and was written by Alastair Heim. There’s no word on whether the movie sequel would be based on this or be a completely original story.
Carrey underwent several hours of make-up to transform into the Grinch and the actor has said he would be open to returning to the role if he could do it with motion capture. Carrey has been open about the toll that the heavy make-up took on him.
“The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world,” Carrey told ComicBook.com in 2024.
Before Ron Howard can move back to Whoville, he’s got a few projects that still need his attention. Things have been very quiet about the director’s still untitled firefighter drama with Glen Powell for Amazon MGM and production wrapped earlier this year on his war drama Alone At Dawn.
It’s still early days for The Grinch sequel, but we’ll keep you updated once we know more, including a release date.
