An HBO sizzle reel confirms that The Last Of Us season 2 will be with us in 2025. Not too long to wait, then…

With reports that The Last Of Us season two would begin filming in early 2024, it followed that the finished series wouldn’t be with us until the following year. HBO has now officially confirmed that, with an HBO max sizzle real stating that The Last Of Us’ next season would be “coming in 2025.”

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will, logically enough, be reprising their roles of Joel and Ellie respectively, and it’s common knowledge that the next season will follow the events of the second videogame. Co-creator Neill Druckmann has even teased that a small ‘element’ from The Last Of Us Part 2’s cut content – which will be shown off in January 2024’s remaster – will make an appearance in the second season. What is it exactly? He isn’t saying.

The bigger question mark surrounding season two is who, exactly, will play Abby Anderson, one of the second game’s central characters. There was some gossip in mid-November that Booksmart and No One Will Save You’s Kaitlyn Dever was in talks to take on the role. In the game, Abby’s quite a physically imposing character, and it’s said that Dever’s performance in No One Will Save You – Brian Duffield’s sci-fi horror, which is well worth seeking out – was one of the things that convinced The Last Of Us’s producers to offer her the gig.

With filming shooting set to begin on the 7th January 2024 in Vancouver (according to the FTIA’s website), it’s likely we’ll have confirmation on this rumour fairly soon.

The downside is that there’s at least 13 months – and likely more – before we’ll get to watch The Last Of Us’ second season ourselves. Still, there’s always The Last Of Us Part II Remastered  to tide us over between now and then. The reworked horror sequel releases for PlayStation 5 on 19th January 2024.
