The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim is heading to cinemas this Christmas ā€“ and hereā€™s the first trailer for the film.

Weā€™ve known for several years now that an animated feature film set within The Lord Of The Rings was on the way. Thereā€™s lots to get excited about with this project too: an anime filmmaker, the award-winning director Kenji Kamiyama (who directed the excellent Blade Runner: Black Lotus) being given a Hollywood franchise and working with a Hollywood studio, something we donā€™t see as often as we should.

Thereā€™s Brian Cox voicing a legendary King of Rohan. Also, the film is an official extension of Peter Jacksonā€™s revered Lord Of The Rings films. Oh, and the setting is Helmā€™s Deep, one of the storyā€™s most iconic settings, a highly-defensible fort which means lots of action and daring exploits.

So far, so good.

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim releases this Christmas and we now have a trailer to light the beacons of anticipation.

Peter Jackson produces along with fellow The Lord Of The Rings alumni, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. Another familiar face from the franchiseā€™s past is returning too, with Miranda Otto reprising her role as Éowyn who serves as the tale’s narrator.

Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna and Janine Duvitski also feature.

As for the story: ā€˜The film tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf (Luke Pasqualino), a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm (Brian Cox) and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg – a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep.ā€™

Jacksonā€™s trilogy of films have only become more revered in the decades since their release. Thereā€™s something incredibly sincere about them which is often missing from modern blockbuster cinema. As enjoyable as films such as Alien: Romulus and Deadpool & Wolverine were this summer, there seems to be an increasing sense of yearning for blockbusters that arenā€™t proudly showing off how self-aware they are and if The War Of The Rohirrim possesses that same sense of unadorned guilelessness that the original films, it sounds like a fine Christmas treat.

Hereā€™s that trailer below. The film releases on 13th December.
