HBO’s The Penguin has concluded, but will there be a season 2? Matt Reeves won’t rule it out. Read more on that below.
The Penguin recently aired its final episode – and what a conclusion it was. If you haven’t seen it, then you’re missing a terrific crime series.
There’s already been a lot of talk about the possibility of The Penguin season 2, but it always seemed a little unlikely given that the first season was designed to fit in between The Batman and the forthcoming The Batman Part II. Series star Colin Farrell had also previously told Total Film that he has no desire to ever wear the extensive prosthetics required to play Oz Cobb.
The Batman director Matt Reeves, who’s had a creative hand in showrunner Lauren LeFranc’s spin-off series, has been chatting to The Hollywood Reporter following The Penguin finale. He hasn’t ruled out the possibility of another season. When asked whether The Penguin might come back return, or whether Sofia (Cristin Milioti) would be receiving her own limited series, Reeves said: “Everything is on the table. But at the end of the day, we feel like there are more stories to tell in this world.”
Reeves is busy working on the second The Batman film, and while The Penguin didn’t specifically cause any severe changes to the script, Reeves said the success of the series opened some creative doors.
“It gave us ideas and we’re going, ‘Oh, we could do this,'” Reeves said. “But we’re still talking about the bigger picture and the future and what a second season of The Penguin might look like.”
Reeves was also asked whether Sofia, arguably the breakout character from the series, would appear in The Batman Part II, but the director politely refused to answer.
“To see them connect to Sofia, of course, makes us think, ‘There’s more there’,” Reeves said of the audience’s love of the character. “So again, I can’t tell you what it is. We don’t know yet. We’re just starting to figure that out.”
In a separate interview, Colin Farrell seemed more enthusiastic about returning for another season of The Penguin.
“If there’s a great idea [for season two],” he said, “and the writing was really muscular and as strong or stronger on the page than it was the first season, of course I would do it.”
