Here’s a project that’s been around for the best part of a decade, and only now looks like it’s finally found a way forward. It’s an adaptation of JJ Connolly’s novel Viva La Madness, which in print form is a sequel to his tome Layer Cake. Layer Cake the film starred Daniel Craig and an ironing board, and was the directorial debut of Matthew Vaughn, who to that point was more known for producing Guy Ritchie’s films.

Now? Viva La Madness is going to the big screen, with Guy Ritchie directing it instead. Jason Statham is set to star, and it’s a project that The Statham has been involved with on and off for a long time. The one time I interviewed him around the time of Spy, he was pushing it as a television project. But now, it’s going to be a feature film.

Thing is, though, as much as Viva La Madness the book is effectively Layer Cake 2, the film won’t be. Instead, the idea is for Viva La Madness the movie to be a standalone film, without any links to Matthew Vaughn’s forerunner.

It’s the latest reunion for The Statham and Guy Ritchie, who seem to be working together more and more at the moment. Stath already has two films set for release next year too, and the likelihood is that Viva La Madness is pointing towards a 2027 release instead.

Guy Ritchie has penned the script for Viva La Madness, a film project someone told me about a week or two and I’ve had to keep mum on. The plan is to go before the cameras next January. It’s heading to the American Film Market to seek its distributors, and don’t be surprised if Prime Video and its chequebook emerge victorious.

More on Viva La Madness as we hear it.
