Mike P Nelson, who previously rebooted Wrong Turn and Silent Night, Deadly Night, is to direct horror sequel Saw 11.
A franchise too valuable to leave rusting in a shed for too long, Saw is set to return for its eleventh entry over the next few months or so.
Creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell started talking about making Saw 11 in February, hinting that they had plans to bring back Tobin Bell’s killer, Jigsaw.
It’s now been officially announced that Saw 11 has a director: Mike P Nelson, a filmmaker who already has two reboots under his belt. He previously made the quite-good 2021 version of Wrong Turn, and wrote and directed the 2025 incarnation of Silent Night, Deadly Night, which was effectively a reboot of a reboot.
The screenwriters are Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock, who previously wrote, among other things, 2019’s In The Shadow Of The Moon, an okay serial killer/sci-fi thriller with some atmospheric direction from Jim Mickle.
James Wan and Leigh Whannell are producing with Jason Blum through their production companies Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, and the finished product will be distributed by Lionsgate, as reported by TheWrap.
“It speaks volumes that James Wan is passionate about returning to this franchise,” enthused Lionsgate boss Adam Fogelson in a statement, “and his belief in Mike evokes his own breakthrough with the original Saw. Mike is one of the promising voices shaping the next generation of horror. He has a singular vision for this film, and we’re incredibly confident in what he’ll deliver.”
Mike P Nelson expressed similar enthusiasm in his own statement.
“Being asked to play in this twisted sandbox with James is nothing short of a dream come true,” he said. “Greg and Geoff and James have crafted such a wild script that brings the mystery of the original while exploring new insane bloody ideas that meld so well with the brutal moral compass of the franchise. Let the games begin!”
Saw 11 will be the first sequel since 2023’s Saw X, which righted the horror ship somewhat after 2021’s Spiral, which was terrible in many baffling ways. Here’s hoping the follow up to Saw X doesn’t take quite as long to emerge as the sequel to Fast X.
