Hideo Kojima’s apocalyptic delivery franchise Death Stranding is getting an animated spin-off series, due to appear on Disney+ in 2027.

Having left Konami under less than friendly circumstances a decade ago, game design auteur Hideo Kojima has forged his own off-kilter multimedia franchise: Death Stranding.

The post-apocalyptic videogame is about to spawn an animated TV series, it’s been announced, with the show set to appear on Disney+ in 2027. Going under the working title Death Stranding Isolations, it’ll be directed by Takayuji Sano (animation director on Attack On Titan, among other things) and features concept art from Ilya Kuvshinov (Ghost In The Shell: SAV_2045). Kojima, who keeps a close eye on his darkly surreal post-apocalyptic universe, will executive produce.

The show’s announcement comes a few months after the release of Kojima’s sequel, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, which came out in June, and the news that Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One filmmaker Michael Sarnoski is to direct a film adaptation, in the works at production company A24.

The series also shouldn’t be confused with the feature-length anime also announced this year, which is currently called Death Stranding Mosquito.

Death Stranding emerged in 2019, and while it was markedly different from the Metal Gear series that made Kojima’s name, it retained his taste for the cinematic and plain weird. A digitised Norman Reedus starred as the player character Sam Porter Bridges, a kind of end-of-days Yodel worker. As Bridges, you moved packages from place to place, avoiding the frankly terrifying supernatural forces littering the landscape. Oh, and to help you avoid those forces, Sam is accompanied by a psychic baby in a jar.

The game was a hit, and Kojima soon began building his Death Stranding empire. The animated series, announced at a Disney showcase in Hong Kong, will follow a selection of new, younger characters clawing out an existence in the franchise’s doomy world.

Once, there was an explosion…

Lonesome souls of the dead manifest in the physical world, reaching in search of the living. However, the connection they create triggers a massive explosion that eradicates anything of this world—a phenomenon referred to as the Death Stranding. These events wipe out nations as well as civilization itself. People who remain are now isolated, withdrawn, and without connections. As humanity stands at the brink a legendary porter set out to transport both cargo and wishes of its senders, reconnecting people in the hope that they might still be saved.

Based on the video game born out of the mind of legendary game creator, Hideo Kojima, comes a new animation series headed by Japan’s up-and-coming animation studio E&H production. Helmed by E&H’s Takayuki Sano, it follows in the footsteps of the original in spirit and ideas and depict the world of Death Stranding through a bold and yet subtle touch and top-class hand-drawn animation.

Somewhere in North America, just as Sam Bridges walks through the continent in order to save America, the someones are also trying to deal with their isolation in their own way. An old man trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior who tries to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy with a grudge against Bridges. A girl who embraces loneliness.

On the precipice of the end of humanity and the world, their fates and hopes converge, as another story of Death Stranding begins.

And now, comes another explosion…

Death Stranding Isolations is due to stream on Disney+ in 2027.
