Despite a recent Emmy nomination and glowing reviews, Wonder Man won’t be returning for season 2.
Marvel’s Wonder Man was a rare highlight in the studio’s otherwise uneven output when it premiered in January. The series, created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Young, starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as superpowered actor Simon Williams working in MCU’s version of Hollywood where actors can’t have superpowers. Ben Kingsley also returned to the role of Trevor Slattery, one of the most memorable parts of Iron Man 3.
Reviews for the series were largely positive and in March, Marvel announced that Wonder Man is getting a season 2 but the studio has now gone back on that promise as revealed by Variety.
According to the outlet’s sources, despite the renewal, a writer’s room for Wonder Man season 2 never opened and writers have now been released to work on other projects.
The season renewal was somewhat of a surprise as most Marvel series tend to run for just one season and spawn spin-offs rather than multiple seasons. Only Loki ran for two seasons and Daredevil, which moved over from Netflix after the first season, premiered its excellent second season earlier this year. The third season is slated for 2027.
There were no viewership numbers released for Wonder Man season 1 so it’s unclear if the decision was due to not much audience interest or if there’s simply too much going on in the studio’s catalogue. Cretton is currently promoting his latest superhero movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, also earning mostly glowing reviews.
Abdul-Mateen II also recently received an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series and for very good reason. Wonder Man managed to find the perfect balance between superhero antics and pure comedy, a surprisingly difficult combination to pull off in a limited series.
The series also made news well before its release date after a crew member died after falling from a catwalk on set.
Variety does note though that we might see Wonder Man in the future still. Even though season 2 isn’t in the cards anymore, that won’t stop the character from appearing in other projects and we all know Marvel loves to mix and match things within its increasingly complicated cinematic universe.
