Once upon a time, it looked an absolute certainty that Kiefer Sutherland would be bringing the character of Jack Bauer to the big screen. The TV series 24 in the early 2000s was a gigantic deal, with Sutherland landing a massive payday as ratings soared.
Yet against the backdrop of making 24 episodes of the TV show every year, finding space to make 24: The Movie seemed impossible. It didn’t stop lots of us patting ourselves on the back and calling it 2, overly pleased with the most obvious gag on planet Earth.
There was a period of time when a Die Hard and 24 crossover movie was being talked about, cunningly entitled Die Hard 24/7, but tht fell to the side too.
But as you’ve probably realised by the fact that we’re all gathered here, the idea of a 24 movie is back on the cards (after being kicked around last year). It’s been pushed by the company behind the show, Imagine Entertainment. It’s confirmed to Variety that plans are being put together for a new film. As Imagine’s Justin Wilkes is quoted as saying, “It’s a little bit informal at this point, but if you look at Russia, Ukraine and just the theatre of Europe right now, the world needs Jack Bauer.”
Sounds like a cracking bit of escapism to take us away from the real world is very much on the cards.
There’s still a fair amount of work to get this up and running, though. Kiefer Sutherland has shown enthusiasm in the past towards reprising Jack Bauer, but Fox – the company that backed 24 – is now owned by Disney, so where may be a slight hurdle there. And also: is there still enthusiasm for the franchise and/or the character?
