Alex Garland, Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy look all set to return for 28 Years Later Part 3. More on the story here.
When it was announced that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland were returning for more adventures in what became 28 Years Later, the immediate plan was for a trilogy of films. Sony bought in, and two of those movies were thus shot back to back. Boyle directed 28 Years Later, which arrived earlier this year, and incoming next month is Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
But the fate of the third film has been in a little bit of limbo. The idea was that Danny Boyle would come back to finish the trilogy off, although he’s currently in the midst of making Ink, of which you can read more here. However, Sony appeared to be hedging its bets to see just what kind of response it would get to 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Screenings of that have been getting underway, and presumably, the signs are good enough for it to move forward
As such, it’s now been revealed that 28 Years Later 3, which presumably it won’t be called, has been given the greenlight. Alex Garland has indeed penned the script for the third chapter, and while it isn’t confirmed as of yet that Boyle will be back to steer the final film, that was his stated intention. Presumably, it depends if he can work his schedule around the demands of Ink, which is expected in cinemas at the end of next year.
Furthermore, there’s word already that Cillian Murphy might finally be making a substantive step back into the series, having taken the starring role in the movie that started it all, 28 Days Later, way back in 2002. Murphy is now said to be in talks to return for the next film, and I’d imagine that ideally, it’d be shooting next year, with a view of a 2027 release. I’ve no insider knowledge there, but Sony would presumably want to keep the momentum going.
More information in due course, then, but a positive step forward. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is up next then, and more on that very shortly…
