Disney is reimagining the 1991 cult action movie The Rocketeer, and it’s called on David Oyelowo to lead the new ensemble.
Since Disney launched its own streaming platform, it’s found itself facing the same challenge presented to Netflix, Amazon and the other streaming giants, the ongoing battle to commission original stories to continually justify the monthly subscription fee. Disney however, has one of the largest vaults of characters and intellectual property from which to draw upon, and its latest announcement – a reimagining of the much-loved The Rocketeer – will be sure to please the many fans who adore the 1991 original.
The film, titled The Return Of The Rocketeer, will reportedly launch straight onto Disney+. The script is being written by Ed Ricourt, writer of the excellent Jessica Jones Netflix Marvel show. David Oyelowo has also been announced as the film’s producer, with all of the signs pointing towards him also starring in the film.
Oyelowo, who has switched seamlessly between outstanding character work and leading man roles in the last few years of his career, will play a ‘retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the mantle of the Rocketeer’. No director has been announced yet.
We suspect this news may make more than a few people smile in anticipation. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
