Dwayne Johnson reflects on the fact that we won’t be getting Black Adam 2, thanks to the reorganisation of the DC Universe of projects.

Spoilers lie ahead for Black Adam

Just ahead of his presenting stint at last weekend’s Academy Awards, Dwayne Johnson spared a little bit of a time for a question or two. And one of those that was almost inevitably lobbed in his direction was about Black Adam, the DC project that he’d been attached to for years, and finally got released last year.

Things didn’t go to plan with Black Adam, though. Plans for a sequel were swiftly shelved as a new direction was plotted for the DC Universe. That took with it took the chances of Henry Cavill returning to play Superman on the screen once more, making his brief appearance in Black Adam his retirement from the role.

Johnson is sanguine about it all, arguing to Variety that all concerned made the best film they could. “Our audience score was in the 90s. Critics took a couple shots, but that’s just the business of it”, reasoned The Rock.

The idea of Black Adam 2 and more Cavill Superman appearances was ended when James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired by Warner Bros to come up with the fresh way forward for DC movies. And as Johnson put it, “it’s almost like when you have a pro football team and your quarterback wins championships and your head coach wins championships and then a new owner comes in and says not my coach, not my quarterback. I’m going to go with somebody new”.

Details of James Gunn’s new Superman film – sans Cavill – are in short supply thus far, save for the fact that it’s out in 2025, and is called Superman: Legacy. More as we hear it.
