The celebrated filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reveals a behind-the-scenes peek at his upcoming adaptation of the classic children’s story.

Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion version of Pinocchio is due to arrive in cinemas for a limited theatrical release in November before arriving on the streaming platform the following month. Whilst we’ve already seen a trailer, a behind-the-scenes vignette has now arrived to give us a further insight of what to expect from the highly-anticipated adaptation.

We already know that del Toro has chosen to ground the fairy tale in the real world, using a World War II setting that has proven to be creatively fertile ground for him in the past. The filmmaker is also renowned for creating awe-inspiring physical creatures in his films, and Pinocchio looks set to be no different. Speaking about his decision to use stop motion animation to make the film, del Toro said: “To me, there’s a valuable difference between stop-motion as an art form and digital. Stop-motion in the early days where you had the flicker of fur and fabric, even the atmospheric dust on the sets — and the imperfection of it was totally gorgeous to look at because it told you how the thing was done.”

The production has been co-directed by The PJs’ Mark Gustafson, whilst the voice cast is deeply impressive with the likes of Gregory Mann, Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton all featuring.

You can catch the short feature below, ahead of the film’s arrival in November.
