A live action take on the animated phenomenon How To Train Your Dragon is on the way, here are the first details.

How To Train Your Dragon is one of the most beloved animated franchises of recent years. Chronicling the story of wannabe Viking warrior Hiccup and the bond he develops with his adorable dragon Toothless, so far three films have been released, in 2010, 2014 and 2019 (each distributed by a different Hollywood studio, fact fans), with the franchise now also encompassing a television series, books and video games.

A film studio will never let a good franchise lie, and so it is that How To Train Your Dragon is being given the live action treatment, courtesy of Dreamworks and Universal.

The good news for fans is that creator Dean DeBlois will still be behind the camera, serving as writer, director and producer. It will be his first foray into live action (presumably with CGI elements), and if it’s anything like other animators making the jump from acclaimed animation to live action, such as Brad Bird making Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, then the results should be well worth waiting for.

It’s moving quickly too, with pre-production and casting well underway. A release date of 14th March 2025 has been set.

We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
